Our oceans house more than 86 million metric tons of plastic. Every year, that number increases by 8 million. Herman Miller is diverting this waste by revamping their products with ocean-bound plastic (OBP).

The Little pieces add up

As a founding member of NextWave plastics, Herman Miller is working to create a global network of ocean-bound plastic supply chains. The goal? Establish these recycled pieces as a commodity and reduce the volume of plastic waste little by little.

OBP is a major problem, polluting our oceans, harming ocean-life and negatively impacting people. By integrating OBP into Herman Miller products, they are doing more than making an environmental impact. Herman Miller are taking a small step to build a better future.

Herman Miller Aeron Chair

Making the best, better for earth

Herman Miller updated the Aeron Chair, adding ocean-bound plastic to the body – all without compromising what makes it the best work chair on earth.

The Aeron was designed for a wide range of body types, thanks to the extensive research from designers Bill Stumpf and Don Chadwick nearly 30 years ago. It’s launch was pioneering in the office furniture industry – and it still is, thanks to updated research and material innovation, including the addition of ocean bound plastic to the body of the chair. We’ve always known Aeron is good for our bodies – now it’s just as good for our environment too.

Aeron & Sayl chair by Herman Miller

Herman Miller are expanding the range of products that use ocean-bound plastic. Ocean-bound plastic will now also be used in the Sayl range of work chairs and stools.

As part of it’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, and long-term goal to increase recycled content to at least 50 per cent including the use of ocean-bound plastic across all the material the company uses by 2030, Herman Miller recently announced that from October 2022 all Aeron colourways assembled in Europe (Graphite, Mineral and carbon) are shipping with Ocean-Bound Plastic.

Environmental impact was a key element behind the design of Sayl, with fewer parts and less materials providing ergonomic support to users. Since June 2022, all Sayl work chairs and stools manufactured in Europe have contained Ocean-Bound plastic – further enhancing to the sustainability story of Sayl.
